Acts especially on mucous membranes, relaxing them and producing a\u00a0thick, yellowish, ropy<\/i><\/span>\u00a0secretion. The catarrh may be anywhere,-throat, stomach, uterus, urethra,-it is always characterized by this peculiar mucous discharge. Hydrastis is especially active in old, easily-tired people, cachectic individuals, with great debility. Cerebral effects prominent, feels his wits sharpened, head cleared, facile expression. Weak muscular power, poor digestion and obstinate constipation. Lumbago. Emaciation and prostration. Its action on the liver is marked. Cancer and cancerous state, before ulceration, when pain is principal symptom.\u00a0Goitre<\/i><\/span>\u00a0of puberty and pregnancy.\u00a0Small-pox<\/i><\/span>\u00a0internally and locally. The power of Hydrastis over smallpox seen in modifying the disease, abolishing its distressing symptoms, shortening its course, lessening its danger and greatly mitigating its consequences (J. J. Garth Wilkinson).<\/p>\n

Mind.–<\/b><\/span>Depressed; sure of death, and desires it.<\/p>\n

Head.–<\/b><\/span>Dull, pressing frontal pain, especially connected with constipation. Myalgic pain in scalp and muscles of neck (Cimicif<\/i><\/span>). Eczema on forehead along line of hair.\u00a0Sinusitis<\/i><\/span>, after coryza.<\/p>\n

Ears.–<\/b><\/span>Roaring. Muco-purulent discharge. Deafness.\u00a0Estachian catarrh<\/i><\/span>, with high-pitched voice.<\/p>\n

Nose.–<\/b><\/span>Thick, tenacious secretion from posterior nares<\/i><\/span>\u00a0to throat. Watery,\u00a0excoriating<\/i><\/span>\u00a0discharge. Oz\u00e6na, with ulceration of septum. Tends to blow nose all the time.<\/p>\n

Mouth.–<\/b><\/span>Peppery taste. Tongue white, swollen, large, flabby, slimy;\u00a0shows imprint of teeth<\/i><\/span>\u00a0(Merc<\/i><\/span>); as if scalded; stomatitis. Ulceration of tongue, fissures toward the edges.<\/p>\n

Throat.–<\/b><\/span>Follicular pharyngitis. Raw, smarting, excoriating sensation. Hawking of yellow, tenacious mucus (Kali bich<\/i><\/span>). Child is aroused suddenly from sleep by this tenacious post-nasal dropping. Goitre of puberty and pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Stomach.–<\/b><\/span>Sore feeling in stomach more or less constant. Weak digestion.\u00a0Bitter taste<\/i><\/span>. Pain as from a hard-cornered substance. Gone feeling. Pulsation in epigastrium. Cannot eat bread or vegetables. Atonic dyspepsia. Ulcers and cancer. Gastritis.<\/p>\n

Abdomen.–<\/b><\/span>Gastro-duodenal catarrh. Liver torpid, tender. Jaundice. Gallstones. Dull dragging in right groin with cutting sensation into right testicle.<\/p>\n

Back.–<\/b><\/span>Dull, heavy, dragging pain and stiffness, particularly\u00a0across lumbar region, must use arms in raising himself from seat<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Rectum.–<\/b><\/span>Prolapsed; anus fissured.\u00a0Constipation<\/i><\/span>, with sinking feeling in stomach, and dull headache. During stool, smarting pain in rectum. After stool, long-lasting pain (Nit ac<\/i><\/span>). H\u00e6morrhoids; even a light flow exhausts. Contraction and spasm.<\/p>\n

Urine.–<\/b><\/span>Gleety discharge<\/i><\/span>. Urine smells decomposed.<\/p>\n

Male.–<\/b><\/span>Gonorrh\u0153a, second stage; discharge thick and yellow.<\/p>\n

Female.–<\/b><\/span>Erosion and excoriation of cervix. Leucorrh\u0153a, worse after menses (Bov; Calc c<\/i><\/span>); acrid and corroding, shreddy, tenacious. Menorrhagia. Pruritus vulv\u00e6, with profuse leucorrh\u0153a (Calc c; Kreos; Sep<\/i><\/span>). Sexual excitement. Tumor of breast; nipple retracted.<\/p>\n

Respiratory.–<\/b><\/span>Chest raw, sore, burning. Dry, harsh cough. Bronchial catarrh, later stages. Bronchitis in old, exhausted persons,\u00a0with thick, yellow, tenacious expectoration<\/i><\/span>. Frequent fainty spells, with cold sweat all over. Feels suffocating when lying on left side. Pain from chest to left shoulder.<\/p>\n

Skin.–<\/b><\/span>Eruption like variola. Lupus;\u00a0ulcers<\/i><\/span>, cancerous formations. General tendency to profuse perspiration and unhealthy skin (Hepar<\/i><\/span>).<\/p>\n

Relationship.–<\/b><\/span>Antidote:\u00a0Sulph<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Useful after too much Chlorate of Potash for sore throat.<\/p>\n

Compare:\u00a0Xanthorrhiza apifolia; Kali bich; Conium; Ars iod; Phytol; Galium<\/i><\/span>\u00a0(cancer-nodulated tumor of the tongue);\u00a0Asterias; Stann; Puls<\/i><\/span>. Also\u00a0Manzanita<\/i><\/span>\u00a0(diarrh\u0153a, gonorrh\u0153a, gleet, leucorrh\u0153a, catarrhal conditions).\u00a0Hydrastinum muriaticum<\/i><\/span>-Muriate of Hydrastia (Locally, in aphthous sore mouth, ulcers, ulcerated sore throat, oz\u00e6na, etc. Internally, third dec trit. Is a uterine h\u00e6mostatic and vasoconstrictor; metrorrhagia, especially from fibroid tumors; h\u00e6morrhages;\u00a0in dilatation of the stomach<\/i><\/span>, and chronic digestive disorders).\u00a0Hydrastin sulph<\/i><\/span>\u00a01x (h\u00e6morrhage of bowels in typhoid).\u00a0Marrubium<\/i><\/span>-Hoarhound–(a stimulant to mucous membranes, especially laryngeal and bronchial; chronic bronchitis, dyspepsia, and hepatic disorders; colds and coughs).<\/p>\n

Dose.–<\/b><\/span>Tincture, to thirtieth attenuation. Locally colorless. Hydrastis, mother tincture, or fluid extract.<\/p>\n
