MORPHINUM
\n<\/span>An Alkaloid of Opium<\/b><\/p>\n

Morphine bears the same relation to Opium as Atropine to Belladonna-i.e, represents its nervous side. It is less stimulating, less convulsant, and more decidedly hypnotic. Constipates less and affects contractility of the bladder more. It is less diaphoretic and more pruritic.<\/p>\n

Mind.–<\/b><\/span>Profound depression<\/i><\/span>. Irritable, fault-finding, hysterical.\u00a0Shock induced by terror. Dream-like state<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Head.–<\/b><\/span>Vertigo from the least movement of the head<\/i><\/span>. Headache with sensation of being “wound-up”. Bursting pain; head drawn back.<\/p>\n

Eyes.–<\/b><\/span>Bluish, drooping lids.\u00a0Itching<\/i><\/span>\u00a0of eyes. Delusion of vision on closing eyes. Starting, injected; diverging strabismus. Pupils unequally contracted.\u00a0Look unsteady<\/i><\/span>. Ptosis.\u00a0Paresis of recti interni<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Ears.–<\/b><\/span>Left ear throbs painfully; better, heat.\u00a0Seems to hear circulation all over body<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Face.–<\/b><\/span>Dusky red or pallid lividity of face, lips, tongue, mouth or throat<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Nose.–<\/b><\/span>Sneezing in paroxysms.\u00a0Itching<\/i><\/span>\u00a0and tingling on end of nose.<\/p>\n

Mouth.–<\/b><\/span>Very dry. Tongue dry, brown violet in middle.\u00a0Thirst<\/i><\/span>. Loss of appetite,\u00a0with aversion to meat<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Throat.–<\/b><\/span>Dry and constricted. Pharynx paralyzed, swallowing almost impossible; better hot drinks, worse solids.<\/p>\n

Stomach.–<\/b><\/span>Nausea\u00a0incessant and deathly<\/i><\/span>, faintness, constant retching. Vomiting of green fluid.\u00a0Nausea and vomiting on rising up<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Abdomen.–<\/b><\/span>Distended. Acute pain in abdomen and along spinal column.\u00a0Tympanitis.<\/i><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Rectum.–<\/b><\/span>Diarrh\u015ba watery, brown, or black with horrible tenesmus. Constipation; stools large, dry knotty, with tendency to bruise and fissure.<\/p>\n

Urinary.–<\/b><\/span>Paresis of bladder.\u00a0Strangury. Slow and difficult urination<\/i><\/span>. Retention of prostatic hypertrophy.\u00a0Ur\u0107mia<\/i><\/span>, acute and chronic.<\/p>\n

Male.–<\/b><\/span>Impotency. Pain in right spermatic cord, (Oxal ac<\/i><\/span>).<\/p>\n

Heart.–<\/b><\/span>Alternation of tachycardia and bradycardia<\/i><\/span>. Cardiac muscular tissue is intact, even if severely exhausted. Pulse small, weak, dicrotic.<\/p>\n

Respiratory.–<\/b><\/span>Faint and struggling for breath\u00a0diaphragmatic paralysis<\/i><\/span>; hiccough; dyspn\u015ba, paroxysmal, on first falling asleep (Lach; Grindel<\/i><\/span>). Cheyne-Stokes respiration. Chest tight. Pain in middle of sternum. Dry, hard,\u00a0teasing<\/i><\/span>, exhausting cough, worse at night. Strangling cough, with viscid mucus sputum; thin, scanty, but sounds loose and abundant.<\/p>\n

Back.–<\/b><\/span>Pain along spine. Weakness of loins. Aching across lumbo-sacral region; cannot walk erect (Cimicif<\/i><\/span>).<\/p>\n

Extremities.–<\/b><\/span>Staggering gait.\u00a0Numbness<\/i><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Skin.–<\/b><\/span>Livid<\/i><\/span>; purple spots; zoster-like herpes.\u00a0Itching<\/i><\/span>. Skin lost its elasticity. Urticaria appearing at climaxis.<\/p>\n

Nervous.–<\/b><\/span>Restlessness and hyperethesia; trembling, twitching, jerking, convulsions.\u00a0Extremely susceptible to pain<\/i><\/span>. Pain causes twitching and jerking of limbs. Violent and\u00a0sudden<\/i><\/span>\u00a0neuralgic pains and sudden fainting.\u00a0Delirium, melancholic in character<\/i><\/span>. Neuralgias\u00a0intensely painful<\/i><\/span>, left supraorbital; right intercostal, better from heat;\u00a0multiple neuritis<\/i><\/span>. Sore feeling all over.\u00a0Bed feels too hard<\/i><\/span>. Aggravation after sleep (Lach<\/i><\/span>). Neuralgia after zoster (Mezer<\/i><\/span>).<\/p>\n

Sleep.–<\/b><\/span>Yawning,\u00a0drowsy<\/i><\/span>; prolonged, deep sleep, Sleepless; restless sleep, with frequent startings. Sleepy, but cannot sleep.<\/p>\n

Fever.–<\/b><\/span>Chills. Icy coldness. Burning heat; profuse sweat.<\/p>\n

Dose.–<\/b><\/span>Third to sixth trituration.<\/p>\n
